Josh Jacobs can return to football work. That does not mean the NFL has finished deciding what his absence will ultimately cost. Green Bay’s official account says Jacobs came off the commissioner’s exempt list Monday, with practice planned for Wednesday. Matt LaFleur left his availability for Sunday’s game at Detroit undetermined.

The same team account says the league’s personal-conduct investigation remains open after Jacobs pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges arising from a domestic incident. Returning to the roster and resolving that investigation are different events. A practice plan establishes neither exoneration nor a final disciplinary outcome.

Paid leave is not the final financial answer

Article 46, Section 5 of the collective bargaining agreement supplies the framework. A player receives pay while on the exempt list. Games missed can count toward a suspension ultimately imposed, with salary returned for credited games. The number subject to repayment cannot exceed the suspension’s length.

That makes money already received potentially exposed to a later requirement. But exposure is not repayment. Without the final sanction and credited games, a conditional calculation must stay conditional. Returning to practice does not settle the amount, and an estimate is not a league invoice.

What the $3.4 million example measures

Over The Cap lists Jacobs’ 2026 base salary at $10.2 million and scheduled cash at $11.5 million, including other components. For a suspended-game salary calculation, NFL Football Operations identifies a one-eighteenth base-salary rate. Applying that rate to an illustrative six games produces $3.4 million: $10,200,000 ÷ 18 × 6.

That is not an announced sanction, a verified repayment or money established as already forfeited. It also is not a claim that six ordinary paychecks totaling that amount have been collected. The CBA’s 36-week payment timing is a different mechanism from the one-eighteenth suspended-week salary basis.

Using the $11.5 million scheduled-cash total or a cap charge in place of base salary would answer a different question. Bonuses, original guarantees, current protection and any unpaid balance require their own terms. This draft establishes no bonus recovery or guarantee cancellation.

The football decision has its own evidence

LaFleur distinguished Jacobs’ training from the football exposure he has missed. Our analysis: the practical alternatives are to establish readiness in practice, manage the first workload or wait. Those choices concern preparation. They cannot substitute for the league’s conduct determination, and no public return-to-practice announcement settles them automatically.

The human stakes extend beyond whether Green Bay’s running game improves. The underlying case concerns a domestic incident. Precision means retaining that context while distinguishing the established plea, the open league process and any eventual punishment. Availability should not become a shorthand for either vindication or complete accountability.

The Fully Guaranteed verdict

The leverage here is institutional, not an invented contract negotiation. Green Bay controls football use within the rules; the league controls its disciplinary process, with the CBA governing relevant pay consequences. Jacobs’ return creates an opportunity to work, while the financial outcome still depends on a decision that has not been established in this account.

Keep three columns separate: readiness to play, games credited against any suspension and salary actually repayable. The next meaningful update is a documented change in one of them. Until the final terms exist, $3.4 million belongs in the conditional-example column.
